Desh Deshpande

Dr. Gururaj Deshpande, fondly known as "Desh", is co-founder and chairman of Sparta Group LLC. The MIT Center for Technological Innovation is named after Dr. Deshpande, for his many contributions. The MIT Deshpande Center serves as a catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurship by supporting research and collaboration among entrepreneurs and young companies. As founder and chairman of Cascade Communications, between 1991 and 1997; Cascade grew from a one-person startup to a company with $500 million in revenue and 900 employees. In June of 1997, Cascade was acquired by Ascend Communications for $3.7 billion. Prior to Cascade, Desh co-founded Coral Network Corporation in 1988. Previously, he held various management positions at Codex Corporation, a subsidiary of Motorola. Desh also taught at Queens University in Kingston, Canada in his early days. Desh holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from IIT, a masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and a Ph.D. in Data Communications from Queens University in Canada. Dr. Deshpande is the founding investor and Board Member of Webdialogs, Tejas Networks, Airvana, A123 Systems, Sandstone Capital, Cascade Communications and Sycamore Networks.
